Student
Housing. Students in the ESSP program stay in this
shelter at the center of the Beartraks property.
Located in
coastal Maine, Beartraks is an outdoor education and
adventure school with a focus on learning through nature.
Beartraks students learn through wilderness treks,
survival skills classes, and an emphasis on living in harmony
with all things. The canoe trips and the treks are not just
scenic tours of natural areas. Interwoven into each journey
are lessons on edible plants, animal tracks, survival skills,
weather prediction, taking care of the land, spiritual and
nature awareness.
Our
goal is for students to have fun, and to begin to learn the
ancient skills of wilderness survival. As we learn to blend
with and care for the land around us, we become aware of a
deeper wisdom hidden within the skills.
Our
featured class is the three-month long Earth
Skills Semester Program (ESSP). Beartraks is
running the ESSP in partnership with Jack
Mountain Bushcraft.
The ESSP is designed as a semester-long survival skills
and wilderness living class that can be used as a semester
away by college students, but is not limited to college students.
Go to ESSP for more information.
In addition
to the regularly scheduled classes, we can schedule a class
for your group at a mutually convenient time and place. Go
to Group Classesfor
further formation.
The primary
instructor for all Beartraks classes is Dan Fisher,
former head instructor and founder of the Wilderness School.
Classes are designed for adults of all ages. Mature teenagers
may participate, but the number per class is limited.

"To touch
the earth is to come face to face with Creator..For years
it has been an honor to know Dan Fisher. He has walked the
path as a caretaker of our Earth Mother. The respect with
which he shares his knowledge of survival skills is a way
we would all do well to follow. It is rare in this time that
we find people such as Dan. One must look hard and long to
find the few that are among us. We feel truly blessed to be
called friend by this young man, and honored to have him as
an adopted son of our People. Mitakuye
